Much research has been done on the specialized knowledge needed for teaching mathematics. As a teacher of mathematics, you are a specialist who can provide insights into how students learn mathematics and how to effectively teach mathematics to others. In this session, you will engage in the process of accessing and using your specialized knowledge for teaching mathematics as part of a mathematics -specific consultation. We will then provide you with the opportunity to engage in a similar process in which you will learn how to engage in consultations with special education experts so that you can access their specialized knowledge of working with students with special education needs. The goal of the session is to help you feel more confident in your ability to engage in mathematics-specific consultations in order to synthesize your special knowledge of teaching mathematics with the specialized knowledge of special education experts in order to provide the best possible mathematics instruction for students with special education needs.
