Triangle Congruence Theorems: Developing Reasoning Through Informal Arguments
This session will include the description of an activity used to introduce triangle congruence theorems in a high school geometry course. The purpose of this activity is to develop students’ reasoning and justification through informal arguments prior to writing proofs using triangle congruence theorems. Participants will discuss the number of elements needed to prove two triangles congruent. Participants will then be assigned a possible triangle congruence theorem. Group discussion will follow, including arguments formulated by participants, as well as student examples from high school geometry students. The session will conclude with a summary of the activity and its use for implementation in a high school geometry course.
